The murder of 21 year old Meredith Kercher took place on the 1st of November 2007 in Perugia, Italy. Meredith Kercher was living in Perugia fora  year whilst studying there. She shared a cottage with three other women, one of which was 20 year old Amanda Knox.

Meredith's body was found partially clothed under a bed cover, she was found to had been stabbed in the throat with a knife. Amanda Knox is said to have came home that day to the front door open, some small spots of blood in the bathroom and Meredith's bedroom door locked. Amanda got her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito to come back to the cottage with her, which is when they noticed that one of the windows had been broken and Raffaele called the police.

Amanda Knox became the prime suspect. After being questioned a number of times days after the murder, Amanda implicated herself and Patrick Lumumba, a man she worked for. On the 6th of November, the police arrested Amanda Knox, Raffaele Sollecito and Patrick Lumumba and they were held on a suspicion of manslaughter and sexual assault. Lumumba was released when forensic evidence leaded to Rudy Guede and on the 8th of October 2008, Rudy Guede was found guilty of sexual assault and murder. Knox and Sollecito were sentenced to 26 and 25 years. In October 2011, they were both released as there was a lack of evidence that they were guilty. On the 30th January 2014, both were found guilty again.

In this blog I am going to talk through the stages of a criminal investigation, and how they apply to this case.
