teams involved

In the meredith kercher case, the first police to arrive at the crime scene were the Postal Police, these are the police in Italy that handle crimes related to computers and mobile phones. They arrived to investigate two mobile phones that had been found in a near garden. The Carabinieri (Italian Military Police) arrived after the Postal Police as Raffaele Sollecito had rang and reported a break in. When The Carabinieri arrived they forced open Meredith's locked bedroom door and then discovered her body. The police watched Amanda Knox's and Raffaele Sollectio's behaviour outside the crime scene, they were seen kissing outside the cottage and the police seen this as inappropriate behaviour and without any evidence against them the police took this as a lead and viewed them both as suspects.

The forensic scientist team failed to collect the evidence correctly from the crime scene as they did not wear the correct protective equipment such as protective masks and hair caps when gathering the evidence. They also did not collect all of the evidence needed from the crime scene when they should have. For example, the bra clasp that was said to hold the DNA of Raffaele Sollectio, was found six weeks after the crime, therefore the evidence that it contained was not reliable.

Amanda Knox was questioned for hours in the days following the murder, the police were questioning Amanda Knox with no evidence against her apart from her behaviour outside of the cottage. If the police had waited to see the analysis of the forensic evidence, they may have took a completely different lead. The police followed the lead of viewing Knox as a suspect and by doing that they found out that on the night of the murder, Knox was meant to be working in a pub for Patrick Lumumba, but at around 8:30pm he text her telling her she did not need to go to work. Knox sent him a message back saying "See you later." Because of this text the police accused Amanda of meeting up with Patrick Lumumba that night. If the police had investigated this properly they would have known that Patrick was in the pub all night. Amanda Knox had 12 different police shouting at her and accusing her of the murder, she ended up confessing to the crime and implicated Lumumba. This was a mistake in the police's part. The evidence found lead to Amanda, Raffaele and Patrick being arrested for the murder on the 6th of November.
